I sing and dance and laugh in fright
Oh, what a wonderful sight
A beautiful moth ‎
On a lamppost ‎
Glued to the light
Like stained glass
Carefully cut out
By an artist’s scythe ‎
‎“Here layeth a death's head hawk moth”‎
Says a note
Stuck with decidedly un-ancient tape

I hear it scream
And hundreds of companions cry
A shrill, unpleasant, choir
Announcing their tragedy to the world
Yet the death’s head hawk moth
Is not yet dead
And I, a passive witness,‎
Stand petrified
Watching its demise

Shhhhh be quiet
Can't you hear
The screams echo?‎

Wow! What an excellent debut drabble. Welcome to Drablr, Firefly. Let’s have loads more please.

(You should get on really well with Jamie Clapperton, another drablr!)

Sudden thought, Firefly... seeing those you’re following and the content... you’re not by any chance Jamie C himself under an assumed name/nom-de-bug are you?🤔

(...and DO write a book... not someday... or one day but start to-day! “Even the longest journey starts with a single step!”)

Thank you so much Neville! I am not Jamie C but am very flattered you thought I could be. I'm hoping Drablr will help me write regularly so that I can improve, thanks for the encouragement :)

You’re welcome, firefly, we need writers with enthusiasm, particularly as we (hopefully) emerge from Covidisation.

Welcome to Drablr, Firefly. A wonderful debut. And like Neville, I wondered if this might be Jamie as well, seeing as you both seem to have an entomological fascination.

Thank you Christopher! I suppose I might have been inspired by Jamie since I did browse his drabbles before writing. I have always found insects fascinating, although I often run the other way when confronted with one in real life!

Thank you so much Frenchie! I have always loved poetry as well, especially Prévert who was very inspiring to me as a teenager.

Have read this a couple of times now but remain too scared to stop and listen to the screams . Genuinely unsettling. Very glad you're on Drablr firefly. ;-)

    The famous Jamie Clapperton!!
I think "genuinely unsettling" is the perfect compliment for this piece. Thanks for the warm welcome!
