Rain is what they prayed for Where elsewhere, rain was a curse turning roads into rivers, forcing people onto rooftops, here roads were
coursing with cars, their rear view mirrors black with ash and soot, the buildings and rooftops collapsing into billowing smoke. Somewhere in the distance floated hope: survivors, safety, someplace to stop, to summon others, to sleep.
If only the skies would open and flood this hell, force the flames to flare, sizzle and burn out. If only there had been enough time to turn back and take
what was left behind. Somewhere else rose prayers for heat.

It is such an enormous tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved in this terrible disaster on multiple levels. Your drabble captures the extreme irony of the extremes extremely well, D.M. I just wish this true story didn't need to be told. Very touching. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Thank you, Neville. What we take for granted, other people wish for...

thank you, Jamie
looking back at early ones, I forget what specifics prompted them, and they do
float out into that open interpretation for me, as well...

This was very good. Is the Where suppose to be capitalized in the first sentence? Really liked the ending as well...

Thank you Elizabeth. There is a period missing between the "for" and "Where."
And how to add it is beyond me now.
