Hope is the life-preserver you pull across your chest to keep your heart buoyant as the boat circles and circles. Somewhere you imagine the dog
floating on debris, his head up, in a goofy grin, his front legs anchored,
his back legs paddling, like a crazy cartoon in a hotel pool with poodles
flirting in bikinis and a greyhound waiter balancing a tray of mixed drinks.
Or a whale surfacing and the dog riding his back to jump safely ashore.
But this is the Pacific, a flat surface of one horizon with a dog
overboard, no longer in sight.

This is exceedingly well written with wonderful imagery. What a shame it is such a sad outcome for the object of the story.

with apologies, Neville, the drabble ends too soon, apparently the dog was found on an island by the navy a month later, and was returned with a new dog tag which said
"Keep the Faith"

Thanks for the update, D.M. I like happy endings. Look out for the 3 legged dog of Lucca Drabble later. I saw this dog with 3 legs getting on famously on the walls of Lucca, Italy today and I thought who do I know who's really fond of dogs...

Loved the language in this, D.M. and glad to know the story had a happy ending after all.
