That's what they call him, he confided, every time we go to the vet. The
diagnosis was cancer almost two years ago. He was only supposed to last
six months. Mind you, we can't go anywhere. He keeps us home.
It's a sort-of palliative care, you might say. We have him on a high protein diet, and sometimes we hand feed him. He's been such a great little dog, we couldn't give up on him. You know what it's like. He's got his meds and he sleeps a lot. We won't get another one for awhile, after, you know...

that is beautiful... and so sad in a way but you can really feel the love and care for an old friend.
On a writing note, I like the way the title is part of the drabble, so, saves words too. Clever!

So tenderly told.I am sorry to read this.
It's likely the love for his family which is making him hold on so even though he's weak and tired, he's happy every single day that he's around you.

This is gently heartbreaking. Gently because of the love and care he's being given. Lovely, if tragic drabble.

One of my bro's dogs died this way. Very cruel - for the animal and the owner.
But in my opinion the last sentence is just not holding - in reality, I mean.
I do not know any person who could keep themselves from getting a new dog at the first occasion presenting itself.

Thank you all. 'Heard the story from a friend. (I agree with you Iarwain, we are on our third sheepdog.)

I agree with Frenchie. I also love how the title begins the drabble.

Sad but lovely drabble, D.M. Clever idea running on from the title.
