The Bentley

The Big Day #2

My daughter is charmingly innocent... makes us laugh. The wedding car would need to drive up the yew-lined path to the church door at the top of the hill. Walking up the hill would leave her exhausted and unready to march up the aisle with me to Mendelssohn.

The wedding car would be large; four and a half litres and two tons of vintage classic owned and driven by a chum of mine.

"Do you often get Bentleys driving up to the church door?" she asked.

"Not often." the Bishop replied.

Bishop, Bentley... she expected nothing but the best.

The Bishop

The Big Day #1

The evening before the Big Day, we went to see the Bishop in the pretty parish church on the hill. He was what all clergy should be, but many are not. He was warm, inspirational and just a little iconoclastic. He was very understanding of my daughter’s limitations, her inability to stand for long, even on the arm of her intended. They would sit on chairs and only stand when necessary for the congregation to see what was going on.

“And if I bless you when you’re both sitting down, you’ll still end up married!” he announced.

Amen to that.
