“Everyone keep quiet,” Nacek said. “Calen and Jake, go to the safe room.”
“But,” Jake started to say.

“Go,” she said. “You too Chad.”

“I can help,” Chad said. “People will underestimate a man in a wheel chair.”

Nacek and Natka looked at each other. He shrugged and she gave in, “Alright, but stay back. Let us handle it if we can.”

“I’ve been wanting to try out my new toy I **acquire**d,” Nacek said, patting Taser holster on his hip. “I call her Vera.”

“You’ve been watching Firefly again haven’t you?” Natka shook her head. “How are we related?”

“That’s not fair,” Jake tried to cut in. “Tell them Calen. Tell them that isn’t fair.”

Calen was tired of being told what to do by Jake. That’s what started this entire mess to begin with, Jake being a bully.

“I don’t have a lot of money because the diner burned down.” Calen turned to Jake, “You stop being a bully.”

A quick flash of fear crossed Jake’s face, but said nothing.

“You know that isn’t an excuse. We fixed it and your mom owns it now,” Nacek said.

A light flashed through the **window**, killing all conversation.

“Who’s that?”

“It’s time we had a discussion,” Chad said. “Ever since what happened, you two have become nearly inseparable.”

“Is that a bad thing?” Jake looked at Calen.

“Not a bad thing,” Natka said. “But, you,” pointing at Jake, “Are a bad influence.”

“No I’m not. Tell em Calen.”

Calen tried to curl himself up. There was nothing worse than being put in the center of something. “I don’t think so.”

“How much money do you have Calen?” Nacek asked.

“I dunno. What does that matter?”

“You used to be **thrifty** with your money. Now you don’t have any,” he said.

“If your stupid genie hadn’t been out there we would have been fine,” Jake said. He had his arms crossed and he was slouched in the chair.

Calen didn’t like getting into trouble, but he had started letting Jake take the lead when doing things and that has gotten him into quite a bit of trouble lately. He felt like it was **karma**.

Chad rolled his chair into the room, followed by Nacek, Natka, and Farid. Farid’s skin, lighting the room with a brilliant light display of colors.

“Would you turn your skin down,” Jake whined.

Farid increased his brightness.

Jake walked around the edge of the property, keeping the house within viewing distance. Calen was tagging along, almost unwilling. There were times when he could be brave and do what needed done, but right now did not feel like one of those times.

A loud thumping noise from the woods rattled the trees. Bursting through the trees was a humongous creature. It stood at least fifteen feet tall and its skin was flashing through the colors of the spectrum.

“I **banish** you to the house,” the creature said. “You veer too far.”

“That’s not fair Farid,” Jake whined.

“Go!”

Natka sauntered up beside Chad, “Told you all not to mess with him.”

“He cheated,” Jake said.

“It is not cheating to use the tools at one’s disposal,” Chad said, lowering them back to the ground. “I am so happy that you all are here.”

After dinner Chad, Natka, and Nacek went into the study to discuss business, leaving Calen and Jake to roam around the house and yard. It was dark out and Chad had warned them about the **carnivorous** wolves out in the woods.

While Jake was wanting to go exploring, Calen preferred the safety of the house.

Nacek peaked over the ridge of the **motor** of the wheelchair whirred up the flagstone path. “That’s our target boys,” he looked at Calen and Jake.

“I don’t know man,” Jake said. “He’s an old guy in a wheel chair. Is it really fair?”

Calen laughed, “He is more than an old guy in a wheel chair.”

“Eh, we can take him,” Nacek said. He stood up and charged. Calen and Jake following behind.

The man turned the chair to face them, smile on his face. With a wave of his hand, all three were left hovering in the air.

Jack bit off a small piece of straw paper, getting it nice and wet. Aiming down the straw, he blew with all he had, sending the spit ball towards Natka’s neck. Her hand flashed out and it.

“Woah,” Calen said.

“Nice **instinct** sis,” Nacek laughed.

Natka gave her brother a sideways look, “I’ve lived with you for hundreds of years. I know how boys act.”

A spit ball splatted against Nacek’s cheek. “Blagh,” he wiped it off. Calen and Jakes let loose their laughs from the back seat.

“Are we there yet?” Jake asked.

“No,” Natka said, “And quit asking.”

“You know,” Jake said, “The people in the mountains eat kids.”

“No they don’t,” Calen protested as they climbed back in the car.

“Sure they do. Most of them are probably trolls or something.”

“Stop being so **defamatory**.”

“Listen to you. Did you get in trouble again Calen?”

“Yea.”

“What letter did you get to this time?”

“F.”

Jack laughed at him, Natka joined in on the laughter. Calen pouted in the back. He knew they were just teasing him, but it still sucked to be singled out. He wasn’t about to tell them he was grounded from using magic.

Calen gawked at the beauty of the view from the outlook point on the mountain. Jake pushed him out of the way to look through the mounted binoculars. “Hey,” Calen protested, pushing Jake back. They were fourteen.

“Stop,” Natka said pulling them apart. She was several hundred years older, but looked to be barely eighteen. “We are here for a reason.”

“As you keep saying,” Calen crossed his arms, pouting.

“It’s a surprise.”

“I’m tired of surprises,” Calen said. The last surprise was learning magic and having to stop his mentor from doing the wrong thing for the right reasons.
