They were young lovers recently engaged. They couldn't have known about George Viccars taking delivery of new cloth from London and with it an epidemic. Along with Mompesson's edict, Emmott and Rowland practised self-isolation and made the ultimate sacrifices only breaking the quarantine by meeting either side of the river at Cutlet Delph. True love had to find a way for the young sweethearts. Even though death was rife in the village, Rowland was there for Emmott.
How could he have known that night when there was no answer to his call, that she had succumbed and was dead?
