He burst into the room, expecting to see all of his old friends.
Things had changed. People had moved on and new people had replaced them.
It had been a very long time and he wanted to tell people all about what had been going on, what he had been doing.
He cleared his throat to speak.
People looked at him with suspicion.
Who was this stranger?
He suddenly couldn't think of what to say.
His return had been far less epic than he had imagined it would be.
He sat down in the corner and watched everyone else instead.

Awww! Sad, but rings a few bells with me Tim, particularly school reunions when I expected to see me old mates but end up failing to recognise a load of old men instead. (Glad I never use a mirror!) Nice one.
