"That is not a black hole."

"Are you sure? It's a terrifying, gigantic vortex in space that's tearing apart a star as we watch."

"Exactly! It's a swirling vortex in space. A Black hole looks nothing like this!"

"Oh! You mean it should look like a featureless black sphere with a fiery accretion disk where you see behind it while standing in front?"

"Yes. And that... Is not a black hole."

"Then what the hell is it then, if it's not a black hole?"

"If I didn't know better, I'd say that this was a wormhole. But they don't exist."

By the way, I dumped all my drabbles out to 2 books on Amazon. "The Augury" and "Waking the Machine" They're kindle downloads, or Paperback from their Print-on-Demand service. I'm happy to share how I did it with anyone interested :)

Kindle files are free, direct from me :)

My sister has been trying to get me to do that. I'm in the process now of getting all my drabbles organized. A lot of them I wrote on Drablr and didn't have them saved to my computer, so that's what I'm doing now.

Don't get me wrong, it's PAINFUL! SO much cutting and pasting!! Had to be done though. I put them into Scrivener and then compiled them into an Epub and Kindle format directly. For the physicals, I output them to Word and then use the Kindle Create app.

Wow, Jeff. It sounds a lot of work. I’m wanting to publish a couple of drabble things too. Have you used Createspace or KDP? Or both?

I’ve got my Skin Deep, which I’m renaming due to other books and a film of the same name. I’ve done the cutting and pasting (and yes it is laborious) and had front and back covers designed. But I do need that shove to make it happen 🥴 Tell me that it’s really worth it... even if it’s not true!😊

Neville. Yes. Yes it is worth the effort. I've not used Createspace, but I did use KDP Create just to make it easier to get it into Amazon KDP. The only thing I would say is to check the dimensions of the paperback. It's nice to hold it, and then realise just how much work you've managed to put in!

Thanks Jeff. That really is encouraging. I’ve had ‘Skin Deep’ loaded onto KDP for a few years now but have not finally committed yet. Now I am energised!

I formatted mine as a drabble-per-page. That makes it super easy to read on a phone/kindle/paperback. I used scrivener first to collate and manage things and Kindle create to submit it. The online cover creator in KDP is pretty good. I wish I could post a photo here for you to see.

Michael will probably be very grumpy with me for doing that. Sorry! I know that this is not a social media platform.

I reckon that Michael will forgive you Jeff; he’s a very decent guy and one could hope for a better site owner. (and... soto voce... thanks for the non-link 🤫)

They look really good, Jeff. I like the covers. Am I correct in thinking that you get a few hard copies and just have to pay the postage from S. Carolina?... and that they provide an ISBN too? It must be great to have a hard copy of just your own work and your own choices! I have a few books but they are shared with others as short stories and, imho, not all of them are up to professional standards. I have a couple of micro books that are mine alone... and if people like/dislike them then it’s just down to me! I really am getting energised now 🏃‍♂️

They were printed in the UK as that was the marketplace I set when I uploaded them to Amazon. They provided the ISBN for free. I did allow them to be available for free on Kindle unlimited, mainly because I'm not looking to make money. They're a nice-to-have :) And surprisingly thick too! It really lets you realise just how much is there!

I only paid printing costs by the way. It was something like £2.35 per copy for the Augury.

Was there a minimum order quantity to get the £2.35 rate? Tw, I agree with the free Amazon Unlimited.... I just want to be ‘out there’!

  • avatar

    Jeff Taylor 5 months ago

Yes, there was a minimum order...

Hehe! And then pro-rata for more?

I think author's get a flat rate. Once the book is "Live" on the KDP dashboard you can click the little button on the far right of the book and order author copies from there.

Thanks for that Jeff. One thing I want to get into hard copy too is my late great chum Steve McBrevity’s drabbles so I can give a copy each to his family.

I'm happy to help with that if you want. :)

That’s a very kind offer Jeff. I might take you up on that. Maybe, like I believe you have with Jamie, we can connect on FB for ease of comms, as I have photos for front and back covers... and of course his real name. We were best mates since my wife and I moved in next door to Steve and his wife back in 1973. I wrote and delivered a special eulogy for him at his funeral just before lockdown which I would like to include as an epilogue... and I’d like to give a dedication to his wife, brother, kids and grandkids. I am currently about one third of the way through copying and pasting his Drablr output.

Just breaking Michael's Regex statement. ;)

I'm happy to help out with getting his drabbles into a state that it can be uploaded into KDP :)

Excellent. Thank you very much Jeff. Then I will continue to copy and paste until have them all downloaded, in the order they were posted, and then talk about what I need to do.
