"Exhuming a family plot is not pleasant. Let's get this over with. Sergeant, I want the coffins uncovered, then we'll open them in turn."
"Yes ma'am."
Lieutenant Meyers waited patiently as the graves were uncovered.
Then they opened the first casket...
The body was there, withered and desiccated, but the head was encased in translucent mycelium. A thick bundle disappeared through the casket wall. Then they opened the second, third, fourth. All the same. Desiccated body, and a thick bundle disappearing into the earth.
They followed a bundle, and saw...
The fruiting bodies were huddled together, foetus-like, human-like...

Wow, exciting! What a great tale. Love the use of the words desiccated and fruiting.

Thanks Neville :) Just for everyone else's edification (If you didn't know already), a fruiting body is the part of a fungus that typically produces the spores. For example a mushroom is a fruiting body.

Hi Jeff. I didn't know that. Thanks for the lesson; it's good to learn something every day. The next time I eat a mushroom it will be more fruitful; I'll be wondering whom I'm eating! :-)
