Today BBC screened a programme about the Three Rivers Race, an annual 24 hour sailing race of around 50 miles on the beautiful Norfolk Broads. Run by Horning Sailing Club, where my wife’s family were avid yachtsfolk, for many years my father-in-law organised this epic race - the toughest of it’s kind in Europe.
I recall the time I competed as ‘crew’ on cruiser Xantippe under captain Montague. At sunset, knackered, realising we wouldn’t win, forty winks seemed like a great idea. Zzzzzzzzzz!
A search party woke us next morning, enabling us to cross the line in last place!

Haha! And I still have a small plaque recording our completion of the race. My wife and her family had also competed in the race just before I met her... but they didn’t come last....! It takes real skill to be last over the line!!
