When they did the rota they’d promised a party atmosphere in the shop so I said I’d work. I wore a santa hat and a big grin. Was told to take it off as soon as I got onto the shop floor, the smile soon went too.
We were busy.
“Well goodbye. You’ll be the last person I speak to now until the day after Boxing Day. Happy Christmas.” Said a customer just after my lunch-break. As I looked around I realised with a lurching heart it was mostly the lonely out shopping.
I never worked Christmas Eve again.
