The Eternal Night #291

by

I didn't know why I agreed to go. I didn't want to but Mason insisted. But the more I sat there looking at Roxie and that guy laughing and making eyes at each other the more my blood boiled.

I finally told Mason, "I'm gonna go, man."

"Why?"

I didn't answer but said, "Remember that question you asked me? Whether or not I missed the detective game?"

He nodded.

"Well...the answer's no."

I walked back out into the eternal night. I'd had enough of Hollywood to last me a lifetime.

And besides, I'd already starred in that movie.

THE END

Well there it is. Another Jake Randolph tale in the can. We know, of course, that he would return to being a detective professionally in a couple of years, but he wasn't quite ready at this point. I'm not sure if he was telling the truth to Mason, about not missing the detective game. Only Jake knows for sure.

But fear not....Jake Randolph will return.

Brilliant, Christopher! I’ve really loved reading this latest (but not chronologically speaking) Jake story. Very well done keeping up the pace. You really should look at publishing them all on Kindle. You’d be putting yourself out there and it seems relatively easy to do. Be sure to let me know when or if you do and I’ll be your first paying customer!

I’m probably going to do try and publish my Skin Deep drabble story on Kindle and eventually do the same with Fedelta, when I get off my backside and finish it. (I am getting in the mood for that right now! I know I’ve made promises before to finish it, but this time I might actually get to do it. And that’s a promise!)

    Thanks for the ride!

Thanks, Neville. I really need to check into self publishing but I just haven't stopped to do it. I'm really looking forward to the return of Fedelta. I'm anxious to see what Paolo is up to!

I'm sorry I haven't had enough time to read your Jake Randolph or Neville's series too. I hope to carve out some time. Surely it will be a crazy ride.

Just a suggestion Christopher, if you could check out Kindle Vella since, your in the States. Not sure if it's for authors elsewhere.

I really enjoyed this Christopher. It made me laugh in places and almost cry sometimes, and the comparison of an aspect of detective work with acting was very interesting.. Wonder if Jake will ever try treading the boards? I'm still with Roxie about the way Jake treated those kids though I I believe him about his motives and am grateful to him and creator for a stimulating Saturday. Thanks Christopher!

Thank you, Jamie. I appreciate it.

I never delved into what the Derek Slade movie was about. It might be interesting to write a drabble series of what that screenplay would be and see how much it parallels what Jake taught Mason.

Derek Slade was actually the first noir story I ever wrote, when I was about 18 or 19. He was based in New York City, but was similar in character to Jake. Whistling Eddie was even one of Derek's informants until I pinched him and put him in Jake's world. Unfortunately I don't have that original Derek Slade story anymore. It was on my first computer and I didn't back it up so it's lost to time now, I'm afraid.

Btw, I just checked out Kindle Vella that Verity mentioned. She’s correct in that it’s just available so far in the US, but it looks quite interesting for those of us writing serial novels. I would imagine that the amount of formatting one needs to do is less than for Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), which is probably more in the mind than in reality! Hope Vella will soon be available here soon... not that it could possibly take the place of Drablr!

Loved the story, Christopher. It's a very good plot. I couldn't let it slip for more than a day. Thoroughly enjoyed it!!
