Growing Old With Grace #2

by

I bought some of that dye to put on my hair. Grace always liked running her fingers through my chocolate dark hair back when we were first married 56 years ago. I wondered if I could get her to do it again.

I locked myself in the bathroom and followed the instructions to the letter. When I finished I couldn't tell if it looked right or not. Grace would have to be the judge.

I emerged from the bathroom and found her in the kitchen.

She laughed for 2 minutes and then said, "You look like Lyle Waggoner's great grandfather!"

I did the first of this series almost 5 years ago and never did another, so I thought I'd pull it out of the mothballs.

Not sure if Lyle Waggoner was famous over there but you can look up his picture if not.

And I say "over there" since most of my friends here are in the UK.

Hehe! I’ll check him out. Re UK friends, I think you’re an Anglophile so it’s maybe not surprising. (Btw, they’re re-running Fawlty Towers over here right now and I’m bingeing on it. I watched my favourite today, The Americans, the only one where Basil ‘wins’ (in a way - of course, he never does really). Cracking stuff, the humour in which is timeless and laugh out loud.

The drabble reminds me of the other day, when I was designing an invitation for a significant wedding anniversary party we’re having soon (limited to 30 guests... outside - English government rules). I found a wedding photo for it where I had so much hair and my grandson (the Small Talk one) couldn’t recognise me when shown the photo as there’s not a lot left now🥴.

    Haha!

Yeah, that's one of my favorite Fawlty Towers. I loved Fawlty's British interpretation of the American's phrase "bust his ass."

When Basil said "I just smashed his backside!"

And to this day now I know how to make a Waldorf Salad.

    "Celery! Apples! Walnuts! Grapes!"

You'll probably know Lyle Waggoner when you see him. He made the rounds in the 70s. He was a regular on the Carol Burnett Show and played Maj. Steve Trevor on Wonder Woman.

Yep, I’ve got him. I recognise the face... and the hair but just didn’t know the name.

On a completely different subject, I keep thinking of Alabama as I’ve been listening to John Prine recently, his ‘Angel from Montgomery’ being on one of my Spotify playlists. And I wonder if it looks like many other cities over there and think you must live relatively close to it... but relative distances in the US are way bigger than in the UK...

I live about 40 to 45 miles northeast of Montgomery, but I've been there a lot. That's where all the malls, movie theaters, bowling alleys and pool halls and things like that are, so when I was younger I spent a fair amount of time in that city. I don't go there much now because the crime has gotten really bad, even though the mayor and the city council try to put a good face on it. They build up certain parts of the city and draw people's attention to that and away from all the slums and the crime infested areas.

It's a typical southern city where you can see antebellum remnants of the past (that they're trying desperately to erase), and also see the progress of making it look like every other city in America, rather than preserving the beauty of its heritage.

Sorry, that got political all of a sudden.

Don't worry about that kind of chat. I hate the way that developers have been allowed (mostly in the past... I hope!) to build monstrosities out of keeping to most UK towns and cities. Our High Streets (that's where the focus of shopping normally is over here) all have (or had before Covid/Amazon!) the same chain shops. An American Anglophile, Bill Bryson, from Iowa, lived here (maybe still does and travelled round GB and wrote of it in his 'Notes on a Small Island' book. He commented on how sad it was that most town and city centres look the same as they all have the same shops. That's kinda boring! But hey, maybe it's progress...

...Bryson was for a number of years Chairman of the Council for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE). Not bad for a yank! He cared/cares passionately for England... because generally it is beautiful.

Btw, love both series title and drabble title too!

Thanks. I've been wanting to post more drabbles so I've been going back and looking through my earlier drabbles and came across Growing Old With Grace and realized I only ever did one. I have a Jake Randolph story that I started but I've kind of gotten stuck in the mire of the story.

Hopefully I can drag myself out of it and get far enough along to feel comfortable about starting to post it. I like get at least halfway (or what I think is halfway) through the story before I start posting so I don't feel so much pressure.

You know, it was worth a try :-) as the way to a woman's heart is to make her laugh, so 10/10 on this one. I am sure Grace appreciated the effort.
I had to google Lyle Waggoner then I knew him from the Golden Girls (one of my favourite shows ). Thank you for the smile!

You're welcome. I remember him from the Carol Burnett Show and the old Wonder Woman TV show.
