Clocks

by

We got our first VCR in the mid-1980s. I must've been about fourteen. It was great. We could rent movies on tape and watch them at home, bypassing the theater. Of course, you had to wait six months after it left the theater before you could get it.

But what I remember most was being distracted by the blinking 12:00 on the face of the machine because we couldn't figure out how to set the clock.

Now you have smart phones, smart TVs, smart everything.

And we couldn't figure out how to set the clock on a dumb VCR.

Yeah, we eventually figured out how to set the clock so we could set it to record programs when we weren't there. But I remember that blinking 12:00 going on for quite a while.

We didn't get one until quite late in the eighties. As the resident techie I set the clock from the time on teletext on the tv. I still have problems reading a clock dial.

I got more proficient at tech stuff later but at that time, about fourteen, I was woefully inadequate in that department. I probably got better at that stuff because any time we had an issue like that it was I who had to read the manual and learn how to fix it.
