"Yes!" she said angrily. "If you hadn't needed me to come in after hours to do this stupid paperwork I wouldn't have been here!"
He looked somewhat relieved. "Oh, yes... Of course."
I interjected, "I think you should give Miss Wilcox next week off with full pay to make up for almost getting her killed, Nick."
I was trying to get her out of the office and away from danger until I could get Deborah back and get Morty and Nick under arrest. It wasn't because I wanted to stay in bed with her all week.

Well, I'm sort of setting up Jake for the future. If you'll recall in the later stories he was rather cautious about getting involved with women he met on cases. He still did it, but he was more cautious. And he certainly never got involved with two women at one time. It's what happens in this case that makes him be that way in the future. That's one of the advantages of bouncing around Jake's timeline and not writing these in a chronological manner.
