The ad had to read:

Man of considerable means seeks female companion. Must be at least 25 years old and ready to travel the world and be lavished with money and gifts. Contact box 3745 c/o LAT.

And then, amongst all the greedy women inundating you with pledges of true love and devotion, you would find this small response:

Sounds promising. Meet me at.......

And then a place, date and time would be given...
