Henry was trying to get home during a torrential downpour. He cursed as the radio said there was more to come. He slowly turned onto the street that intersected with the street his house was on. He could barely see his friend Billy on the roof of his house.

He pulled into Billy's driveway, got out of his car and yelled up to Billy.

"What're you doing?"

Billy cursed. "This roof always leaks during a hard rain."

"Why don't you repair it when it isn't raining?" Henry asked incredulously.

"Because, dumb ass," Billy said with venom, "it doesn't leak then!"

I don't know if anyone else on Drablr is a Beatlemaniac like I am, but June 1st will mark the 50th anniversary of the release of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. I thought about doing a drabble for every song on the album but rejected the idea. But the characters in this drabble are named after people in some of the songs on that album (Billy Shears from the title track, and Henry the Horse from "Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite.")

Just a little indulgence. Pay me no mind.

I shouldn't have said "people" in that last comment. Henry the Horse is a horse, of course!

A wonderful homage, Christopher. I'm not as Beatlemaniacal as you clearly are, but it had been on the radio here (wonderful BBC Radio 4 of course) that SPLHCB was reaching its half century and I know all the songs and the characters and Mrs H has the album (vinyl 33rpm) upstairs somewhere. When she hums the same French tune sometimes I wonder what she would do if I sang out of tune? She would tell me to stop, that's what!

(but I have to confess that I have a rare Beatles vinyl (45 rpm) in the attic too...a pre-fame single of My Bonnie and Ain't She Sweet, featuring Tony Sheridan, who came from my home city. One day maybe I'll sell it on eBay because Mrs H says that if/when I pass away, then the kids will put it in the garbage! Now then guys, what about a bit of respect!

Thanks, Neville. I was 13 when I first heard it (1986), and it completely changed the way I listened to music. I hadn't been long playing the guitar at that point, and hearing that album made me start listening to music with a musician's ear rather than just a casual listener's ear. It was an epoch moment for me, and a pretty good achievement for an album that, at that point, had already been out 19 years.

Wow! That single with Tony Sheridan is rare indeed.

No sooner have you written this drabble, Christopher, and we have exchanged comments than the front cover of our 'Radio Times' the foremost TV and radio guide (originally published by the good old BBC) runs next week's front cover with a full colour pastiche of the SPLHCB album cover, featuring excellent comic and wit Paul Merton in all the roles (and gear). It's tribute will be on the radio, so I'll have to listen! :-)

Neville, I imagine for the next few weeks there are going to be lots of articles/stories/talk about the album.

Thanks, Drew. I've been in a comedic mood drabble-wise lately. Hopefully I can have Jake's next adventure up and running soon.

Anyway the ending seems perfectly logical to me. :-)
