Jade Chen had a safe open, transferring its contents to a suitcase. It looked like she was getting ready to bug out of this place, and she was taking her money and gathering her most important possessions. I was willing to bet a month's pay that the blackmail evidence was the first item on that checklist.
Jeffrey had been filling her in on the night's events.
"Yes, Mr. Miller," Jade Chen said as she continued her work, "my contact at the marina told me that Alex and Skip had been arrested and that you and Mr. Randolph had survived, unfortunately."

We're going to assume that Jade Chen was so rattled and worried about getting away quickly that she didn't alert the guard at the gate that Alex and Skip wouldn't be returning that night, otherwise he wouldn't have let Skip's car back through the gate. Yeah, that's what we'll assume.

Well, I realized after I posted it that I'd left that rather vague. But it does seem logical. People that are rattled like that tend to make mistakes.
