Blaze's father was at the hospital in a matter of moments. He had a look of cautious optimism on his face. He came up to me and shook my hand so hard I had to look when he was done to make sure it was still attached to my arm.

"Look, Mr. Miller. There are some things I didn't tell you on the phone."

His face looked crestfallen. "You said she was alright!"

"I said 'for now she's alright,' Mr. Miller. But she's addicted to heroin. And when I found her she was working in a whorehouse."
