A letter to a friend (exactly as it was written by an eight-year-old):

hello, my freind. i miss you. i hated to see you go away. i hope your ok where you are and that your happy. we always had so much fun playing after school. jumping rope and playing hide and seek. I liked that. Remember wen we use to draw with chalk on the sidewalk outside your house and then the rain would wash it away? The chalk they drew around you is almost washed away. it didnt even look like you. i miss you. bye.
