“I don’t want to stay in the crapheap hotel I was in last time!” I joshed with my Slovak chum in Žilina. “I want to be in the pretty part of town... the Astória, near the bars, the fountains... and Tesco!

So the Astória it was... nice hotel in a brilliant location looking out on the tree-covered foothills of the Tatra mountains and the pretty town square.

I needed Tesco for English Breakfast Tea and my Williamsovka supply!

Later they told me the Astória was where the local mafia boss was shot dead a fortnight before.

Pass the Williamsovka!

Lost... one shirt!

Nevilles Travails - Slovakia #2

The Slovan - the best hotel in Košice (Kòshitsa!). Me and my Finnish mate Lars decided on a drink in the hotel’s basement casino - my first (and last) time in a casino. We just drank, didn’t play. Lars did play it cool though, while I drank in the sights. Hanging around the tables in the shortest of skirts was a host of Slavic beauties.

In my top floor room later, someone knocked on the door. I peered through the spyhole. She was dark, pretty and seemed to have lost her shirt!

She must’ve been from the casino, but I wasn’t playing.
