Beyond The Valley Of The (Ventriloquist) Dolls

Beyond The Valley #4

Abrams shook his head, "Why would the mob go after some two-bit ventriloquist in a four-bit nightclub? There's something more sinister here."

Jacobs pointed to a doll, "Look, him. That's Chucko. Rosie, the manager, said that's the one he was using last night."

Abrams looked at it. It seemed to be staring right into Abrams' soul.

"Maybe Chucko did this, huh, Abrams?" Jacobs said, laughing.

Abrams didn't tell Jacobs that, as they were leaving the dressing room to interview a few of the club's employees, he looked back at Chucko and would've sworn the doll winked at him.

They continued looking around and found a note that had slid down beside the dressing room table.

Abrams picked it up, "Hey, look at this."

Jacobs looked over Abrams' shoulder. "It can't be a suicide note. There's no way he could've done all this to himself."

Abrams began reading aloud.

"I don't know how much more of this I can stand. They won't stop torturing me. They keep compelling me to do things I don't want to do. I don't know how much longer I can resist them."

Jacobs said, "I wonder if he was being squeezed by the mob."

"Well, d'you hear that or am I going bananas?" Abrams asked.

"Yeah, I heard it. I thought it was you laughing at your own lame joke."

They looked around, seeing all the ventriloquist dolls sitting in their own little chairs around the room, staring at them intently.

"Jeez, these dolls are creepy. What kind of a psycho do you have to be to go into a business like this?" Abrams asked.

Jacobs grinned, "Probably the same kind of psycho it takes to be a cop and have to go in and sift through shit like this when gruesome murders occur."

Detectives Abrams and Jacobs went into the dressing room backstage at the Oasis Club where a grisly murder had taken place. Tim Danvers, who was the star attraction at the club, had been slaughtered sometime after the previous night's performance. The detectives went over the place thoroughly.

"Man," Abrams said, "he must've really pissed off one of the patrons of the club with his ventriloquist act."

He heard a high-pitched laugh echo through the room.

"Was it that funny?" Abrams asked.

"No, not really," Jacobs replied.

"Then why did you laugh like a little girl?"

"I didn't," Jacobs responded...
