Setting Out/The Decision

Below the Storm

The passage shook, flakes of mud drifting down from the ceiling. The two sappers stooped low as they made their way down the ramshackle tunnel into the poorly lit unknown. The squad before them had not reported back for 24 hours and so here they were, walls closing in. They finally got to a point where the path split two ways. This was unusual and the two men hesitated gazing downwards into the inky blackness.

Time was running out as they pondered their decision.

The candle flickered in the stale air as above the sounds of battle raged like thunder.
