On Kovalam beach the sun signals an end to daily toil, throwing long fingers of creeping shadow. Fierce daytime heat is scorned and ground to dust.
Women arrive in technicolour splendour. The clack and roll of Malaylam announces their joyous vivacity. This habitual promenade for the grounding goodness of warm sand surrendering to bare feet. They giggle and warble, competing with contented cormorants bobbing on the soft ebbing waves.
Lapping water kisses the shoreline meeting appreciative toes. A gentle evening breeze ripples hems and moves minds. Four wade out, to ankle, to shin, one sits cross legged. Another Keralan sundowner.
