She watched the hands of the clock. There was always a hesitation, like an anticipatory gasp of air, between the "tick" noise and the "tock" noise.

They were arrows, not hands, and Carla wondered at what sort of creature would have such hands that traveled in circles? She imagined a small cylindrical creature, turning in place, waving it's arms as it spun. A mechanical creature, marking the movement of the earth around the sun, like a small petty god at the heart of a great machine.

Carla wanted to ask the god a question. But the hesitations never slowed enough.
