On the hottest week of summer, power went out across the whole city.
The humans couldn’t see without streetlights, and that meant there was no danger. The citizens of the little Transylvanian Borough were free to roam.
They walked around and bought groceries (coconut water with cherry concentrate for color and taste) without worrying about getting jumped under a streetlamp by a goon with a wooden stake. In the streets, bats swooped down and abruptly turned to children above the pavement, landing directly over hopscotch squares. Neighbors chatted from porches, laughing.
At least the vampire demographic was enjoying the blackout.

The title is a line from a song from the musical "In the Heights" that inspired this piece, but the story itself has nothing to do with the musical.

Sweetest vampire story I've read. :-)
