Blind from self-mutilation, Oedipus staggered away from Thebes. Where had it all gone wrong?

When they heard of his horrific destiny, his parents had cast him out. That had been hubris.

When he heard the same prophecy he had fled Corinth and the people he thought were his parents. More hubris.

When he got into that fight with the elderly stranger – who turned out, later, to be his real father – that had been hubris too.

But, with all he had been warned of, marrying a woman old enough to be his mother, now that was just dumb.
