John Connally – Treasury Secretary and former Governor of Texas – was Richard Nixon’s first choice as successor and VPOTUS when Agnew resigned. To Democrats Connally was a renegade, and Nixon was advised Congress wouldn't ratify him, so he chose Ford instead. But what if LBJ, Connally’s mentor, had not already been dying in Texas? LBJ was the ultimate arm-twister and greaser of Congressional wheels. He would have got his friend ratified. 1976: Connally would have won Texas, probably Mississippi and Missouri. If LBJ had lived another year, , , No Ford. No Carter. No Reagan. Probably no Bush.
