It was the second night of the big heat in Britain 2022. The temperature had nudged over 40 degrees Centigrade - an all-time record. Almost the hottest in the World! We sweltered!

Six year old Harry and family came to sleep in our cool ground floor bedrooms. Evening arrived and welcome thunder clouds announced their arrival with lovely raindrops. There would be an almighty storm.

Then Harry asked me.

“Lightning travels faster than sound, so why do we call it thunder and lightning? It should be lightning and thunder!”

I work with words, so why didn’t I think of that?

Out of the mouth of babes comes great revelations, paraphrasing a statement from a very famous book.

Well done Harry! An excellent observation made even more relevant by the fact that it is the lightning which produces the thunder. When is he standing for parliament? They could do with a bit of cause and effect!

Haha! Thanks all. He’s a canny little lad, although Richard, I reckon if I suggested that he stood for Parliament, his response might be “Boring!”... unless it gave him 24 hour access to Minecraft! (Whatever that is!).
