The Jumper #16

by

The two men stood up. The indicator showed that the next train eastwards was due to arrive in one minute. They ambled to the platform edge, Noah holding onto Frank’s arm for safety.

“Did you ever find out the name of the scoundrel Denise took up with, Frank?”

“Denise didn’t want me to know...” started Frank, “...but Luke let it out accidentally. Norman? No, no... not a ‘nor’... more of a ‘no’. No, no, no.... Noel? Hang on, what was your name again?”

“Noah.”

The advancing train masked the sound. Noah’s swift, firm, timely nudge fulfilled Frank’s life ambition.

“NO................!”

Holy crap! Nope, I had it so wrong I'm not even going to voice it!

This was brilliant, Neville. Would make a great episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents.

Thanks Christopher. I woke early today and whilst I’d had the broad idea some time and produced very rough and skeletal notes, I added flesh (and guts and blood!😁) to it and got up and wrote it on-screen during the day. It has excited me because I feel that my mojo has returned with the return to normal service of my lovely wife. Now I have to continue writing...

It's my pleasure. There's some real talent here, and you're at the top of the list.

You flatter me, Christopher, for which thanks... but joint top billing with some cracking writers including you would be more than I could hope for.

    King strikes back!!
Neville, I was so hooked till the end that I couldn't comment on each, apologies for that. This is terrific! The confessions and unravelling of each drabble compelled me to go on to the next. I knew you would end it as some gut-twisting end, but this is truly extraordinary.
I truly enjoyed this, and it's been a while since I read some great stuff. Very glad you'll are back to drabbling.

Thank you so very much, Verity. Your comment makes wonderful reading and a sparks a little guilty pride too! I am so glad you enjoyed it. I was on a roll again on Sunday and really felt the return of my mojo, which has been playing hide and seek recently🥴
