“I don’t want to stay in the crapheap hotel I was in last time!” I joshed with my Slovak chum in Žilina. “I want to be in the pretty part of town... the Astória, near the bars, the fountains... and Tesco!
So the Astória it was... nice hotel in a brilliant location looking out on the tree-covered foothills of the Tatra mountains and the pretty town square.
I needed Tesco for English Breakfast Tea and my Williamsovka supply!
Later they told me the Astória was where the local mafia boss was shot dead a fortnight before.
Pass the Williamsovka!

It’s basically the Slovak equivalent of eau de vie Poires Williams in France, a distillate with the most stunning taste of pears. Not a particular fan of pears as a fruit... but as a spirit flavour, well that's something else! Also known as Hruskavitsa, Körte Palinka (Hungary - still have a small amount of this left😋) and probably other countries’ variants.
