We decided to give my wife’s father a birthday treat. A trip to the Somme WW1 battlefields for him... oh, and Ma-in-law too!

My wife’s car was a tiny sports car, so the four of us set off in my own tiny Ford Ka, ‘The Bomber’. Our neighbours marvelled at the impossibility of so many and so much going so far in so little space.

When I drive my car, I whistle. Mother-in-law didn’t like whistling!

Moans galore from the squashees in the back... but he who’s at the wheel wanted to whistle. And he did!

Thanks Jamie. The others didn’t quite see it that way though! 😁

My husband took his father aged 93 to the Somme where he had been in the WW1
but not before he got his first ever passport.

It was an excellent, if cramped (not for me and Mrs H in the front seats though, hehe!) trip, followed the very next year with a similar Ford Ka (original iconic design - I bought 4 of them on the trot!) trip this time to Monet’s house at Giverny, mother-in-law being rather prone to jealousy. But for the whistling, I had become a model son-in-law, apparently. But in my head... grrrrh!
