Going Viral #3

by

My friend is a kind of Bear Grylls. He lives on his skills and animal instincts. I’m amazed at the ways he finds to cope in the wild, what he will eat, drink and do to survive.

We meet occasionally for a pint, into which he stirs shavings of what he calls forest roots, for their flavour and... so he says, pointing at his lap, and with a wink... ‘potency’.

But with the Coronavirus situation, I asked him what he was stocking up with.

“Ammunition,” he replied.

“Ammunition?”... I gulped... “Why?”

“Cos that means I can get anything I want!”

My kind of guy! (Do you guys actually have the right to bear arms over there? I see people on British TV shows with guns but I thought they were outlawed over there. Forgive my ignorance on the subject.)

No Christopher we may very much NOT bear arms. That’s part of the joke.

So you can't own any guns whatsoever? What about people who do fox hunts? Is it just a restriction on certain types of guns? Like I say, I see people on TV shows there that have them in their homes and not all of them are of the criminal element.

Again, forgive my ignorance. Just trying to learn.

You can own a gun if it is both licensed and kept locked away when not in use. The majority of 'legal' guns are shotguns for shooting pheasants, partridge and wild game when it's in season. There are some rifle and pistol clubs, but these are strictly controlled and for all gun ownership at any time the police can come round to check that the gun is secure in a steel cabinet very, very firmly bolted to a strong wall....

...We are not allowed to carry guns except for legitimate purposes. If you start toting a gun around here there is a serious chance you will be shot dead by skilled police marksmen, although ordinary coppers do not carry guns. Tasers seem to be on the up though. Villains do get and use guns through some underground trade and, of course, characters in Fedelta somehow have access to them... Ah! Fedelta... that reminds me...

Nice segue (looking forward to its return).

Thanks for the info. It clears up a bit of confusion I've always had.

My lips are sealed Drew, but I think the ‘root’ element seems to be relevant.
