A fine Mèze #4

by

Maybe because we are in southern France, over a leisurely petit dejeuner, Mrs H recalled her first trip to France when just 14. Six whole weeks living with a French family in Perpignan, travel there by train with only a 13 year old French girl companion, trips to the beach, the Spanish Pyrenees, smuggling peaches into England... what a wonderful experience!

She told me how a group of Spanish boys mistook her for pretty French pop star Sylvie Vartan and chased her....

We’d not yet met, but my bedroom was covered with pictures of Sylvie Vartan.

Made for each other...💏

Mrs H did look very similar, and what with me apparently a dead ringer for Bob Dylan, what a musical combination. But such unions seem to be extremely fragile whilst we’ve not done badly at all. And, looking at Sylvie now, sure, she’s OK, but I much prefer Mrs H. I think she’s ageing pretty well... 🙂

I'd never heard of her but looked her up. Very pretty. Saw some pics of her with some very young Beatles.

That's amazing that Mrs. H was mistaken for her and you had pics of her on your walls.

It was quite amazing. I’d had this huge crush on Sylvie Vartan and, at some expense, I ordered and bought a French teen pop magazine ‘Salut les Copains’ (= Hello Chums) every week and she was usually the cover girl. I even taught myself to draw faces, the most important of which was Sylvie, which Mrs H remembers me showing her way back (that was brave of me!) Maybe I’ll look it out and make it my profile pic for a while....

Correction, Salut les Copains was a monthly ye-ye pop magazine, not weekly. I wondered how the hell I could afford to buy it weekly, but it seems I didn’t have to! I’m glad to be with my ‘Sylvie’ for so many reasons.

Btw, at my suggestion, my Sylvie has decided to write up her early teens trip to Perpignan and beyond as an autobiographical piece. She writes well, from the heart, and I think she will be surprised how much material she’ll produce! Brava!

That's great. Is she going to post them here?

Maybe she will... or maybe let me post them for her. It sounded a wonderful, Rich and sociology-cultural experience for her. I’ll try.
