There were so many pubs in Elizabethan London Town, and there were also many drinkers to fill them. In one small Southwark street were two pubs facing each other across the road, locked in competitive rivalry. This was a street frequented by the Elizabethan literary set, who wrote and drank to excess.

Writers had to choose which pub to drink in. Phil Sidney and Ed Spenser always drank in The Rose, while Kit Marlowe and Will Shakespeare frequented The Globe.

One night Will, arriving pissed, mistakenly went into The Rose. The landlord, spotting him, shouted “Oi! Get out! You’re Bard!

    It was a joke one of my mates told on the golf course today. His version was much shorter, but I challenged myself to bulk it up! I haven’t been able to hold my head up in public for some years now 🦹🏻‍♂️
