Priests wearing hard hats at Notre Dame
Sensible, to keep them from harm
Admire the spirit of that proud nation
Spare a thought for the congregation.
They’re the ones with Gallic vigour
With spirits high and voices bigger
On Sunday morning in best attire
Still reeling from that dreadful fire.
Forget the sermons, forget the prayers
God’s healing power for sure is theirs
The vast assembly will prevail
Singing hymns on the grandest scale.
With heads held high, hard hats in place
Invited to that holy space
Their voices loud, so proud, aloof
With iron will to raise the roof.

Wow. Really powerful poem, Neville.

Thanks Christopher. It was prompted by seeing a photo of a whole load of French priests in Notre Dame today. Notre Dame is almost, although not that close, a fundamental symbol of Paris as the Tour Eiffel. (It’s a really lovely city if you ever take the plunge and fly to Europe)
