Wards and Warders #3

by

My stay had reached a new level. Life in a non-acute ward. I thought maybe I’d get a good night’s kip at last. But the nocturnal activities around my neighbours’ beds gave me my answer. Wrong!

3am. Clang! Right next to my bed. Wide awake! Around 4am, got to sleep.

6am “Wake up Robert!” He meant me but got the wrong name. Arm wrestling the machine again, and losing.

Sleep.

8am woken again Breakfast! Weetabix.

“How many?”

“Three.”

”Three???” Her disgust barely disguised.

“And two rounds of marmalade toast... pleeeease!”

“Hmmmmph!”

I’ve had a lifetime’s experience of being awkward!

Yes I did... and a second cuppa. Today, she remembered and I got the same again, 3 Weetabix and 2 rounds of toast and marmalade. When I thanked her for the extra cuppa, she said “well, the toast’s dry!” It bloody was! 🥴

She’s actually very nice Jamie. She seemed a bit crusty at the start, but I grovelled by thanking her profusely! If I’m here tomorrow, I might try my luck with 4 Weetabix. Hehe!

Help out a Yank. What is Weetabix? I've heard of it but I don't know what it is.

Hi Christopher. Weetabix is a top UK brand of wheat cereal. It is tiny flakes of wheat combined together to make bricks of approx dimensions 4x2x1 inch. 12 or 24 or even 48 in a box. Three’s a lot for a Brit... 4 would be worthy of a Sumo wrestler! Tastes good. Weetabix is now the generic name for this type of wheat brick cereal. Every major store sells their own version, plus of course Weetabix itself. As English as Marmite (which you should try one day although you might well hate it!... but I LOVE it!)

That sounds like a cereal that Nabisco makes here called Shredded Wheat. It comes in bricks like that. I used to eat that when I was a kid.

Very different from Nabisco Shredded Wheat, Christopher, which we have here and which, in my humble opinion, is absolutely shite. By contrast, Weetabix is terrific... and I want some now!

Sound fabulous Drew! I must try it as a matter of urgency. :-)
