Christmas time. The Nativity scene... cutesy stable, soft light, newborn infant lying in a pretty little crib, Mary, in a beautiful robe of blue and white, Joseph and donkey looking on. No room at the inn.

Time for a reality check.

1. They weren’t married.
2. There would have been no inn. They might’ve stayed with Joseph’s family... except, being unmarried, with Mary in the family way, they were probably shunned.
3. The baby’s ‘crib’ would’ve been a cattle feeding trough.
4, Mary’s robes would be very humble, nothing dyed.
5. The stable awash with cow muck, the smell appalling.

I guess all that is overshadowed by the Savior of mankind being born.

It all seems so... let's say 'sanitised' these days when the reality must have been pretty grim. I've done a bit of research on this and it makes one think.
