He'd been a great stand-up comedian in his era. But in the 'ere and now, his brand of gag was out of touch with the sensitivities of modern-day liberalism. Racist, sizeist, misogynist jokes, even on the private club circuit, were now taboos, with the emphasis on 'boos'.
Those members of the audience who did raise a cackle were turned on by the politically-correct majority. He faced a career watershed. Either he overhauled his act dramatically or he faced dwindling engagements with dwindling audiences and long evenings of heckles and boos.
In the end he chose the booze.

Dylan said 54 years ago "You better start swimming or you'll sink like a stone, for the times they are a-changin'" and that was never more true than it is today. And sometimes I just feel like sinking and getting it over with.
Great drabble, Neville. As usual.
