Skip-raider #1

by

Years ago when McB had that most prized of assets, a free company parking slot next to Westminster Abbey, he drove into London and would collect me from St James's on the way home. Very kind.

Extremely kind... when he realised I'd been on a skip raid! My company was replacing perfectly good Wilton carpets, putting them in a skip outside. Too much for me to take, or rather too much for me to take home!

McB's Saab was handly. Over a fortnight, I loaded it with more carpet than a carpet warehouse.

Over the years it carpeted two houses!

Waste not, want not! When I worked in construction we used to that when we were doing demolition. Especially if it was a state government job. They would replace things even if they weren't worn, all because if they didn't use the budget that they had for that year, the budget got cut for the next year. So they would replace perfectly good desks, office chairs, carpeting. My dad and I looked like Sanford & Son (or Steptoe & Son in the UK) as he drove us home with the back of his pick-up truck full of demoed loot!
