"Anderton, here!, Archer, here!, Arnold, here!, Baines, here!, Bolton, here!, Cam-bell, here!, Camp-bell..."
Before Campbell got to announce he was 'here', the boy sitting in front, Cambell, called out "queer!" A laugh ricocheted round the class, then a fight ensued between the two boys. It had been the teacher's fault really for stressing the 'camp' in the boy's name to distinguish him from the boy before him. Keeping order at register time was tricky at the best of times in this class of young ruffians.
With bloodied noses, the boys eventually stopped.
"Bell-ends!" declared the teacher, angrily.

I think that one was lost on this American, but at least I learned some new slang!

Sorry about that George. The joke was that both boys' surnames ended in 'bell'.... and bellend (or bell end) is a very funny pejorative over here. Whenever I hear the word(s) it cracks me up. I wrote it for S J Gunn as I reckon she might see the funny side too.
