They called him Bob. Nobody knew why. His name wasn't even Robert or Robin or anything with an o or an ob in it. Registered as James Julius March, he could easily have been a Jim or a Jimbo, a Jules or a JJ. But he was Bob.
'Bob' wasn't the sporty kind who would quickly acquire a nickname. He was deep and thoughtful. Few people knew the real Bob.
He didn't play football, cricket, or rugby. However, he'd always fancied swimming the Channel, but couldn't swim.
They found him out at sea off Margate, bobbing about. Well he would!

Whenever I hear, write or say the name 'Bob', I can't help visualising Rowan Atkinson popping the word out in one of the Blackadder episodes when fanciable Kate renames herself 'Bob'!

That's funny, Neville!
And I think about Blackadder too when I hear that. My favorite scene in that episode is when he goes to the doctor because he's started fancying "a boy" and the doctor recommends "a course of leeches!'
