He did what he did, sat around, chilling. He didn't choose to live in Cincinatti, but it wasn't doing him any harm - yet. He had friends, good food, the kind he liked. He had no idea he was critically- endangered. He didn't see the extra danger last Saturday.

A four year old boy crawled through the fence and dropped into the moat. What were the parents doing?

Understandably inquisitive, Harambe played a game of 'pull you through the water' and then seemed rather nice to the boy.

They shot him dead.

Harambe did nothing wrong. He was being a gorilla.

Thanks, Drew. I'm flabbergasted. On the video he looks like he and the kid are just hanging out! That's two heavy handed zoo incidents involving 'beasticide' in a fortnight (see Santiago zoo leocides).

I've never liked the concept of zoos. What happens when a species comes along that's higher than man? Will we be in the zoos then?

    Great job, Neville.

Thanks, Christopher. Conceptually, I agree with you about zoos, but when the work they do truly is in the interests of the species, then I don't hold such strong convictions. However, if the incarceration, however benign, is necessary, then it's also very necessary to keep the human species under control too. What WERE those parents doing...or not doing? End of lecture!

I agree totally. I'm all for wildlife preserves that help protect endangered species and help them to procreate. But just trapping an animal and putting him in a cage for people to gawk at, I'm not cool with that. End of my lecture!
