They were twins, C and IC. Not identical as most centipedes seem, these were identicalish, the ish being the fact that IC, had only 99 legs. C could run faster and get to the prey first. Over time he fattened and slowed, while his twin stayed lean and mean.
One day, C raced ahead, while IC stopped, playing dead. Centipedes are carnivorous, and C, seeing opportunity, immediately thought "dinner" and went back to demolish his twin. With the advantage of surprise, IC suddenly attacked and bit off all but one of his brother's legs.
"Hop off," he said, belching loudly.
