When the coal mine was closed there was little for the men of the village to do. Some moved on, some did nothing, while a few took to crime.

Jake, 19, stood around on street corners, aimlessly. It meant that he saw a lot of what was going on. When he saw a couple of his former workmates breaking into a nearby house, to give himself some purpose in life, he sang like a canary.

He was found the following week trussed up with his head in his mum's gas oven. It seems that he died like a canary too.
