Mike was the rock in the marriage. Dependable, rational, grounded and, some said, boring. After ten years of marriage he knew about his wife's regular infidelities and could 'deal with them'. In fact, he had little option but to 'deal with them' as the alternative, 'not to deal with them', would almost certainly result in a bad deal for Mike as there would surely be confrontation and associated terminal fallout. Underlying hurt was sublimated.

His way of dealing with them was assuming they weren't happening. But this depended on her continuing to produce convincing alibis. He never took much convincing.

This is dark ground for you Neville? Don't get me wrong though, I love it! I love the line "Underlying hurt was sublimated" and the horrific truth that we sometimes have to stay dry at any cost, even if the boat is sinking anyway.

Thanks Jim. Maybe darker than my usual but definitely not based on any experience of my own, unless she's an incredibly good liar! It was prompted by hearing a Crystal Gayle song 'Don't it make my brown eyes blue', if you know it. I could imagine the scenario.

    Thanks all.

    Sorry if it's depressing, Michelle.
