In our 400 year old house, I created three more rooms in the attic. It magnified our space. Two bedrooms plus study, only accessible via one of the bedrooms. I worked well up there. When the kids left home, I could afford a modern, flat-screen TV for my den. I didn't use it much though – permanently switched off.

A year later, I was woken every night at about 4 in our bedroom below to hear the TV above. Something spooky was switching it on. A spook with crummy taste in TV though - old films - Alien, Exorcist, Gremlins etc!

Ooh, that's creepy, Neville. Is that really a true story? If it is you may have just solved the problem of hauntings. Don't call the Ghostbusters, just buy them a TV!

It's true - scared the hell out of me at the time. I've amended it in the last line slightly to give a smile at the end. That's the fiction bit.

The TV was on standby, but no-one was up there at that time of night. My wife and I were the only ones in the house and she was right next to me.

The house was quite old, built as it was in the time of James the First of England (who was also James the Sixth of Scotland), the first of our Stuart kings. Who knows what had happened in that particular house before we arrived?

If they've been knocking around in that attic for that long they were probably delighted when you put the TV in! I like the amended last line. I like two of those movies (I never watched The Exorcist.)
