Commanders had turned a blind eye to the ship's problems; now it was too late. Dissension in the ranks, personal ambitions, prejudices, and distrust precipitated a splintering of the crew and a mutiny, leading to a total breakdown of social order.
They were hurtling helplessly through space at 67,000 miles per hour. The escape pods were utterly useless; there was nowhere to go.
Armed conflicts were raging all over the ship for control of dwindling resources. Life support functions were failing. The food and water were contaminated, and the ship's energy core was approaching critical mass. Spaceship Earth was dying.
