Bobbing on the water a sight to behold captivated the transient crowds thronged on the quayside -a little red vessel crammed with anxious children aboard and a stern lady at the helm, in yellow sou’wester purveying a confused demeanour somewhere between consternation and resignation.
The main act though was the wild skipper, waist deep in water, vainly trying to start the bleeding outboard - you know the sort where you wind a rope and pull. Expletives showered the audience to the horror of the prudes and the amusement of the rest. Finally the motor roared prompting resounding cheers from the jetty.

It was my father-in-law’s fault. A WW2 naval veteran and patriot, he insisted that I bought a British Seagull outboard motor - the worst of its kind, even when brand new.... and then when it was his turn to buy an outboard he bought a Mariner... from Japan! Mrs H looked cute in the yellow sou’wester though!🚣♂️
